Baltra saarele maandusime mööda ainsat maandumisrada, mida mööda me pärast ümber pööramist lennujaama hoonele lähemale sõitsime (just, lennujaamas on üksainus tee). Lennukist maha astudes tervitas meid mõnus soe tuuleiil ja avatud lennujaam, ei ühtki akent. Üldse olid Galapagosel osadel majadel akende asemel spetsiaalsed võrgud – aknaid pole lihtsalt vaja. J
Järgnevad kaks päeva veetsin Santa Cruz’i nimelisel saarel, peamiselt pealinnas Puerto Ayoras. Puerto Ayora on otsast otsani turiste täis ja igal tänaval käib aktiivne ehitustöö. Inimesed on keskmisest jõukamad ent see-eest külalislahked. Puerto Ayora’st kolme kilomeetri kaugusel asub Tortuga Bay, mis on üks ilusamaid randu. Lisaks käisin kohas nimega las Grietas, mis on vulkaaniline ala kus kahe laava moodustise vahel on sügav ala, mis on täitunud veega (pool on merevesi, ülejäänud mage vihmavesi). Üks kohtadest, kus tasub kindlasti snorgeldada! Teisel päeval seiklesin mööda saare keskosa, kus on vulkaanilise tegevuse tõttu mitmeid kraatreid. Hiljem seiklesin mööda metsi, kus hiidkilpkonnad vabalt ringi tatsasid.
Viimased päevad veetsin suurimal (ning uusimal) saarel, Isabela, kus käisin 16 kilomeetrisel matkal mille jooksul nägime maailma suuruselt teise läbimööduga aktiivset vulkaanikraatrit Sierra Negra (läbimõõt kümme kilomeetrit) ning vulkaan Chico’t mis viimati purskar 2005ndal aastal ja seega on kogu maapind senini kaetud laava moodustiste ja tuhaga. Muljetavaldav!
Pärastlõunal sõitsime paadiga mööda rannikut, nägime ainsaid troopilisi pingviine maailmas, pisikesi iguaanibeebisid ning haikalu. Õhtul kõndisime mööda linna, mis meenutas rohkem küll küla. Puerto Ayora’st täiesti erinev, teed olid liivast, asustus oliliselt hõredam ning elutempo aeglasem.
Galapagose saared on üks uskumatult imeline paik maailmas!

Baltra lennujaamas/At Baltra airport

My nine days on the Galapagos began with packing in the middle of the night and waking up a few hours later to go to the airport. Namely we had some important people from England, Germany, Ghana and Costa Rica visiting the office who whe shared the secrets of our success with, then had dinner at Panecillo and later enjoyed the views in the old town on horse carriages. Thus I had been rather busy and left packing for the last minute...
It was interesting to take off from Quito. Usually after taking off the plane still rises for around ten minutes, whereas it’s not needed when taking off from Quito as the city is up in the mountains. We had a great view on the suburbs and valleys around Quito, later on luxurious neighbourhoods in Guayaquil (the biggest city in Ecuador), where we also had a stopover. Among food and other packages they also put boxes of chicks on the plane (almost everything has to be transported to the Galapagos, the locals grow and produce only a few products)...somebody also checked in at the airport with roosters J

We landed on Baltra island along the only road for landing, after which we had to turn around to get closer to the airport building (yes, there was only one road). We were welcomed by a nice warm breeze and an opened airport building – no windows. A lot of houses on Galapagos had nets instead of windows, windows are just not needed J
We (I traveled with two language students who stayed at my house for a few weeks) were met by the guide who took us to the boat and we soon began the journey. The boat was relatively small, only for ten people (plus 5 crew members). Besides me there was a Swiss, a Dane, a Canadian, siblings from the US, an older couple from Australia and another couple from Czech Republic. Thus we had a great group with people from all over the World, the crew was nice and the food delicious!
We spent the next five days visiting various islands, mostly the southern ones. We saw blue footed boobies, cormorans, pelicans, flamingos and lots of other smaller and bigger birds. Lonesome George, dolphins, lizards and of course hundreds of iguanas, who turns out only see a few colours and spend most of the day under a cactus waiting for the cactus fruit to fall. We snorkelled with sea turtles, sea lions, fish, stingrays and sharks and swam in the most beautiful beaches in the World. We went to a lava cave and sent letters from the oldest post office in South America. (The post office oly works with the help of other travelers, because people go through the letters and take the ones that are to their town with them and later deliver them). We saw amazing sunsets and sunrises, fell out from beds in the middle of the night because of waves that were as high as the boat J and enjoyed the stars and the sea view on the deck. Everyhting was just perfect!
I spent the next couple of days on Santa Cruz, mostly in the capital called Puerto Ayora. Puerto Ayora is full of tourists and there is a lot of construction work going on. People are on avarage quite wealthy, but nevertheless hospitable. There is a really nice beach, called Tortuga Bay, about 3 kilometers from Puerto Ayora and I also went to las Grietas, which is a volcanic area where between two volcanic formations there is water (half of it is sea water and the rest is rain water), it’s amazing for snorkelling! I spent the second day in the highlands, I saw some craters and lots of wild giant turtles walking around the forests.
I spent the last days on the biggest (and the newest) island Isabela, where we had a 16 kilometers long hike to the second biggest crater of an active volcano Sierra Negra (with diameter of 10 kilometers) and volcano called Chico, which was active in 2005 and thus the whole area is coverd with ash and lava formations. Impressive!
We drove around the coast on a small boat in the afternoon, we saw the only tropical penguins in the World, iguana babies and sharks. We walked around the town, more like a village, in the evening. It was very different from Puerto Ayora, roads were made of sand, it was a lot quieter and the pace of life a lot slower.
The Galapagos islands is a unique place in the World! The islands could be called paradise islands, because it’s warm all year around, water is amazingly blue and the beaches are one of the most beautiful in the whole World. The animals are not afraid of people (at least on the islands where there are not a lot of tourists), sea lions crawl next to tourists who are sunbathing to warm themselves and swim around snorklers, wanting to play with them. People are very friendly and hospitable and food delicious. But let the pictures talk for themselves!

Yaku

Pikematest seiklustest juba üsna pea!

I realized last week that I only have 2 months left in Ecuador and all the weekends are full of plans. Nevertheless there are lots of other places I would like to visit, but will have to leave them for the next trip... Thus instead of spending the Saturday resting, me and Silja(from Iceland) decided to go to the water museum(Yaku means water in ketchua). Unfortunately the bubble area was closed, but the view from the museum was amazing! After that we spent some time in the old town, had fresh juices ($0.70 for a glass) and ate Ceviche. We then went to a park called El Ejido and spent some time at a local market.

Summer has finally reached Quito, even though they say there are no seasons here - there's supposedly an everlasting Spring. My family also told me today that it gets a bit windier when the summer holidays are about to begin. So it's been a lot sunnier recently, no need to carry around a poncho and an umbrella anymore! :)

All volunteers and their familes got together in Tumbaco(a town near Quito) on Sunday. We played games, danced, sang and tried some delicious desserts the volunteers had made. All 130 people seemed to be enjoying the event! I thus had an active Sunday though, I spent the early morning baking the cake, then helped organizing the event and finally helped to clean the school afterwards. I was so tired by 9 PM that I fell asleep as soon as I got home :)
I've spent the last days working and making plans for my trips. I'll soon be off to the Galapagos, a rafting trip and Peru! Cannot wait :)

Stay tuned for my next adventures! :)

4 kuud/4 months

(Kirjutatud eile)

Täna, pärast pikka tööpäeva, käisin keelevahetuses. Arutelude teemad olid seekord maailma sõdadest koduvägivallani Ecuadoris. Jutuajamise lõpus küsiti mitu aastat ma Ecuadoris elanud olen?  Hispaani keel on nelja kuuga vist külge hakanud J

(Written yesterday
Between visiting projects, planning the family fiesta and attending salsa classes I also visited a new host family yesterday. I’ve visited quite a few host families before, but never alone. I took a bus outside of the Quito, passed 6 traffic lights and 2 petrol stations and then asked for the bus to stop. I tried to find out how far I was from the house by asking the locals if they knew a music conservatory that was supposed to be near where I had gotten off the bus. I got answers from two blocks to 6 kilometers as always. Oh well, I carried on walking hoping to find a house that was in tomato colour (yes, they have a separate colour for describing tomatoes as they are not red here). After about 15-20 minutes of walking I luckily found the house I was looking for J
I explained the family what it means to be a host family and made sure they understood the process and regulations, after which I was shown the house. They had a music school, a local radio and a small shop in the same building. Rather unusual JThey also had a room where they make music videos fur local musicians... I was also shown their pets: 3 dogs, a cat and a kitten, guinea pigs(kept for food...) and of course chicken JThe housewife turned out to be a singer, she proudly showed me a poster of herself at the end of the tour, gave me her CD, a bag full of freshly picked avocadoes and waited for the bus with me J
I had a rather long day at work today, after which I went to language exchange. We spoke on topics from wars around the World until domestic violence in Ecuador, after which I was asked how many years have I been living in Ecuador? I guess I’ve picked up quite a bit of Spanish in the last four months J

Pasachoa

Kuna täna on Xime (töökaaslane) sünnipäev - Palju õnne Xime!

Me, Xime(co worker) and Xime's friends went camping on Saturday to celebrate Xime's birthday - Happy Birthday Xime! :). We decided to go to Pasachoa, which is a mountain about an hour away from Quito, however, it took us longer to get there because of the elections. Elections are compulsory in Ecuador, the people who don't vote have to pay a fine. This time they had to answer 10 extra long questions (the questionaire was in A3 format...), by choosing yes or no. (For instance if people agree that killing bulls after bull fights should be stopped?) Agreeing with the questions also meant supporting the president. Thus since it is compulsory to take part in elections and people have to vote in schools or other predetermined institutions, it also means lots of traffic...

After we got off the bus, which was quite an adventure as the bus was extremely full and it took me a while to get to the door, which meant that by the time I got to the door the bus had already droven a few hundred meters from the place where my friends got off... From there we continued by a smaller car on possibly the worst road in the World :) We put the tents up as soon as we got to the mountain and then went hiking, we only got to hike up the mountain for about 1.5 hours because the sun set and we had to return to the camping place. We were lucky to have the flashlights with us... :)

We then cooked on the gas grill, spoke until the early hours and went to sleep. We had to pack the tents and return to Quito at around 7 because it was Mother's Day and we all had plans.

Yet another great weekend!

Emadepäev/Mother's Day

Head Emadepäeva!!! :)

Mu Ecuadori perekonnaga/With my Ecuadorian family

I got back from camping early in the morning (more about it in the coming days :)), I put on some salsa music and made quickly a cake, after which we went out for lunch. Because it was Mother's Day, we also had Maria Teresa's two sons and a wife of one of his sons joining us (wife of the other son is in the US because their son is graduating from uni there). We decided to have an early lunch to avoid the crowds, it worked out well as we got the last table available. Nevertheless, there were so many families that we had to kill the hunger with toasted and sugar covered corn for a while. We then went to a shop/cafeteria, where they sell all kinds of products that are produced in Ecuador, such as coffee, chocolate, soap, ceramics, but also potatoes that come from the rainforest and are black inside. We really liked that place and agreed to go back one day, especially after we had tried the truffles and smelled the passion fruit soap :) We ate the cake I made and discussed the elections that took place yesterday after we had had dinner. The cake was delicious! I have to make another cake for next Sunday though - for the family event :)

Have a great week!

¡Que chevere!

Viimaseid nädalaid on täitnud paljud tegemised-toimetused. :)

Värske - ülemise porgandi kõrval olevad puuviljad on puutomatid, millest tehakse mahla (üks mu lemmikuid)/Fresh - the fruit next to the carrots is called tree tomatoes and they are used for making juice (one of my favourites)

I’ve been rather busy for the last weeks. I usually only have Monday afternoons free, but this Monday I met the new girls who moved into my house for a few weeks to study Spanish (one is from Denmark and the other one from Canada). On Tuesday we had the volunteers monthly meeting, this time we decided to go to an Indian restaurant. Almost all the volunteers attended since we had to plan the family fiesta which we will hold next Sunday. Some of us are in charge of some games, everybody has to prepare a traditional dessert from his/her country and we will sing a song for the families, for which we created the lyrics at an ice-cream bar in Tumbaco on Sunday. The song is known as ’Mi nina bonita’ (a local hit! ’My beautiful daughter’), which we replaced by ’Mi querida familia’ (’My dear family’) and the lyrics are about our happenings in Ecuador and about the typical food.

Me and Xime (coworker) went to Xime’s house to bake French toast after we had finished creating the lyrics. Xime’s family doesn’t eat dinner , they only have a cup of tea/coffee and a toast or something else light, but they liked the French toast! J We spent the rest of the week preparing two new volunteers (French) for their projects and matching the volunteers who arrive in August with their projects, I went to a salsa class on Wednesday and I’ll go camping to the mountains tomorrow! But more about the weekend newt week. For now, some some pictures of last weeks...
